Another town that was destroyed by the 79 CE eruption of Mount Vesuvius was called Oplontis. I did not have an opportunity to visit the site during my trip. It’s located in the modern town of Torre Annunziata.
The excavation nowadays is comprised of two villas, only one of which is open to the public. Villa B, the one which is not open, appears to have been used for both a dwelling place and a workshop. Some previous excavations, such as a bathhouse and another villa, were looted and destroyed.
The one which is open to the public is Villa A, which was in the process of being rebuilt during the eruption. It most likely suffered some damage during the earthquake of 62 AD. Experts believe that this villa belonged to Poppaea Sabina, the second wife of Nero.
A lot of new things to discover!

Indeed! One of the greatest challenges to excavating Oplontis is that, like Herculaneum, much of the modern city has been built on top of it. So, it’s a slow-and-steady game.
