If you read my memoir, Music, Mayhem, and Bad Decisions, or followed the By Special Request series on this blog, you know that I have had the singular pleasure of seeing Jeff Beck perform. He passed away yesterday, at age 78, after a sudden bout with bacterial meningitis.
Here’s one of my favorite performances, in which Jeff Beck and Imelda May pay tribute to recording pioneer Les Paul.
It would have been something to see him perform live, a true virtuoso. I love Imelda May, what a spectacular pairing!

About 30 years ago, I saw an interview with him where he said he didn’t need drugs, he had the guitar. I don’t know if that’s the way it always was, but that really impressed me. He was always one for going his own way, and the music was incredible. Watching him in that video made me cry, to know that he wasn’t around anymore.
