Blogging from A to Z: I is for “I’m Afraid of Americans”

iSong: I’m Afraid of Americans

Album: Earthling (1997)

Personnel: David Bowie (vocals), Brian Eno (synthesizer), Trent Reznor (guitar, bass guitar, drums, background vocals)

What I love about this track:  It’s a brilliant social commentary, from where I sit, about the problem of American exceptionalism.

Earthling_(album)Trivia: The Union Jack coat on the album cover was designed by Bowie and Alexander McQueen.

Why I chose this video:  You get such a great look at the staging from Bowie’s final tour, “Reality,” which manages to be both spare and elaborate at the same time.  Plus, Earl Slick is marvelous here, capturing the industrial tone of the entire “Earthling” album in a single cut.
